What is the difference between digital transformation and smart factory? 본문
What is the difference between digital transformation and smart factory?
문학중년 2023. 8. 12. 21:07In the previous article, many people understood Digital Transformation (hereinafter referred to as 'DT') as 'IT-based innovation'. In fact, when the term DT is used, it often gives strength to 'change' or 'transformation' in the 'working method' rather than focusing on the transformation of the business model. So, when you come across the term DT in a company, there is no big problem if you understand that it means IT-based innovation or digital technology-based innovation.
I first encountered the term DT while preparing for Smart Factory, but I was very confused. Compared to Smart Factory, I did not know what DT meant, and what differences and similarities there were, so I often couldn't answer properly when someone asked. It seemed to make sense in my head, but it was really difficult to express the differences and similarities verbally or in writing.
The figure below shows the difference between DT and Smart Factory. When a new term appears, it must be clearly defined. If I don't have a concept established myself, it's because I'm confused every time and I can't properly set the direction of which way to go. And at least within the same organization, the definition and meaning of terms must be unified to meet eye level. Otherwise, the same terms can be used, but each person understands them with different meanings, which can lead to great confusion.
Comparing DT and Smart Factory, what do you see as the biggest difference? The biggest difference is that Smart Factory is a concept related to Value Chain, one of the vertical structures of DT. Smart Factory is primarily for the manufacturing domain, whereas DT is enterprise-wide. It starts with strategy and has a vertical system with organizations, business models, value chains, and IT capabilities. Based on this, DT is defined as 'management innovation activities across the company that fundamentally change strategies, organizations, products/services, processes, and systems by utilizing the company's digital capabilities'.
On the other hand, since Smart Factory is centered on manufacturing, it is closely related to production. Raw materials are required for production. These raw materials are procured through procurement. If you go to the pre-purchase stage, there is R&D that develops the product that will be the target of production. When a product is developed, raw and subsidiary materials are purchased and produced, and the produced product is delivered to customers through logistics, and marketing activities for sales and service for possible quality problems are carried out. This structure is called a value chain, in the sense that value increases through stages connected like a chain.
Among these value chains, the concept focused on the manufacturing area is the Smart Factory. To manufacture means to produce. In order to produce, there must be equipment, and the equipment must be operated well so that it does not break down. And to prevent people from getting hurt in the factory, we have to pay a lot of attention to safety. In order to prevent the emission of atmospheric gases or pollutants during the production process, great efforts must be made for the environment. It is necessary to manage inventory in order to store and ship products produced to meet customer demand. The value chain next to manufacturing is expressed as 'logistics'. If more detailed, it can be divided into movement of raw materials within the factory (inbound logistics) and movement to customers (outbound logistics).
The definition of Smart Factory was made while contemplating with the team members when I was in charge of the Smart Factory TF. I made it by referring to Smart Factory data defined not only in Korea but also abroad, and contemplating which one would be the right definition while attaching post-it notes with my teammates. We defined Smart Factory as "a factory that can connect and collect data by applying new digital technology to the manufacturing process, and optimize execution through analysis and prediction." If you read it, you might think it's just that, but I realized later that the process of defining this was the starting point of Smart Factory, and it was a very important task to meet the standards of conversation among all participants.
To explain the two meanings once again, DT is related to the entire organization and refers to all innovation activities based on IT technology or digital technology. Smart Factory refers to an automated/intelligent factory for the advancement or innovation of manufacturing, which is one axis of the value chain under DT.
Afterwards, I will tell you about the effects, directions, applied new technologies, stages, and examples of DT. In addition, we will explain the definition and characteristics of Smart Factory, and how Smart Factory is different in the assembly industry and the equipment industry in turn.
